TV EXQUISITE CORPSE

A stretchy, twisty, stylised looping render.

A render made in Cinema 4D for Swinburne’s GradX event in 2023. All models and textures made by me.

As per the brief the animation must start and stop on the circle graphic in order to seamlessly transition to the other animations in the exquisite corpse sequence.

I wanted to experiment with vastly different rendering and animation styles in this video - so I tried a more painterly texturing and rendering style (instead of realistic), with some rubbery and expressive animation.

Modeling

I created the 3D models to be used in the motion graphics sequence. During this process I kept in mind the fact that they would be dramatically twisted and bent when animated.

Normal and Texture Painting

Painting the normal maps of the 3D models with a brush-like effect gives them a fantastic painterly effect that reacts to the lighting of the scene. This was a significant departure from typical physically-based rendering techniques that gives the motion graphics sequence a unique feel and style.

Lighting the Environment

I lit the environment using a series of ‘blinds’ invisible to the camera in combination with a 3-point lighting setup to give the scene a warm afternoon feel.

Many shots had their own lighting setup to best highlight the action.

Animation

Animating the scene in Cinema 4D.

Post Production

I filtered the shadows of the render separately in order to give them a watercolour/hand painted feel. This was done in the post-production stage by rendering out separate passes (i.e. for diffuse, IOR, emissive, gloss etc). and then applying a displacement map to the Shadow render pass in After Effects.
