UNIVERSITY SOLO PROJECT

LOOP DE
LOOP

An infinitely-looping 3D animated stickman skateboard course.

A looping render made using Cinema 4D. All models were made by me.

The stickman was created using Adobe Illustrator and After Effects.

This render was a great first foray into 3D animation and all the skills that come with it - 3D animation, modeling, lighting, materials, etc.

Optimising the Project

When creating the project, I made many optimisations to keep render times low - especially considering all the advanced rendering techniques used (AO, GI, displacement maps etc)

Animating the Skateboard Course

Animating the skateboard and skater was somewhat of a challenge, since C4D’s timeline preview isn’t quite in realtime.

Lighting the Environment

Setting up a lighting rig. I had one radial tungsten light in in the middle of the environment, and a series of less intense white lights lighting up the various environment details. This was so I could control the light intensity in each ‘area’.

Materials

I decided to use a colour palette typical to satisfying render loops, using some nods to the 80s art style I was inspired by. This included including some floating abstract shapes and a light green wash light from the left at all times.

Sound Design and Post Production

In the post prod stage I ensured the white stickman was clearly visible at all times, including against the white floors, by keyframing a masked copy of the video with adjusted contrast over the original when needed.
