CLIENT WORK

GRITTY GLITCH TITLE CARDS

A set of 4 gritty, glitchy, title cards inspired by prehistoric computer graphics. Created for a YouTuber client.

Warning: flashing lights.

An experiment in pre-rendered graphics.

I wanted to use my knowledge in 3D software (in this case, Blender) to create a simple 3D rendered output, and then experiment with turning this output into a stylistic set of title cards for a YouTube client using After Effects.

A Striking Set of Cards

An experiment in pre-rendered graphics.

I wanted to use my knowledge in 3D software (in this case, Blender) to create a simple 3D rendered output, and then experiment with turning this output into a stylistic set of title cards for a YouTube client using After Effects.

The 3D Component

I began by sourcing public-domain models for each title card on Sketchfab, and then creating a very simple animations using these models. Each animation was rendered with a simple matt white material, and strong lights to highlight all the micro details – an important step for the After Effects stage of the process.

Crunching the Renders into 'pixels'

The first step in After Effects was to pixelate each render to a low resolution, and then map each pixel to one of four 20x20px compositions depending on the brightness (value). This creates the low-res effect seen in each title card. This was done using the Extract, Mosaic, and CC RepeTile effects.

Post Production

Then, I added some text, other graphics, and an immersive moving background to each title card. Finally, some more effects (CC Glow and Noise) were added to make the cards feel a lot more ‘real’ – like looking at an ancient computer monitor. This completes the look and feel of the title cards, giving them that signature gritty feel. I also played around with the visibility of each layer, making them ‘glitch’ in and out of visibility.
